Chief Papaschase was a respected leader instrumental in shaping the Papaschase First Nation. His burial site, believed to be at Elinor Lake, Alberta, holds deep cultural and historical significance, as confirmed by multiple historical publications. Concern arose when descendants in the Elinor Lake area reported a gas company's attempt to run a seismic line through the site. In response, Chief, council members, descendants, and supporters cleared the area and marked the burial ground with a cross to replace the fallen marker. Under Alberta’s Cemeteries Act, marked burial grounds are protected by law, with violations subject to fines and imprisonment. The current leadership is committed to further restoration efforts to honor and protect this sacred site.
